Biography
Person.
Daniel Clowes is an American cartoonist, illustrator and screenwriter whose work helped move alternative comics from specialist comic-book culture into the wider literary and visual mainstream without losing their awkwardness, bitterness or formal independence. Born in Chicago in 1961 and trained at Pratt Institute, Clowes began publishing professionally in the mid-1980s before launching Eightball in 1989.
The series became the main vehicle for an evolving body of work about social isolation, damaged friendship, cultural resentment and the strange theatricality of everyday American life. Ghost World, first serialised in Eightball, became his best-known graphic novel and was later adapted into the 2001 film directed by Terry Zwigoff; Clowes co-wrote the screenplay and received an Academy Award nomination.
