Biography
Person.
Junya Watanabe is a Japanese fashion designer, born in Fukushima in 1961. After graduating from Bunka Fashion College, he joined Comme des Garçons in 1984. He worked on its Tricot line before launching his own womenswear collection within the company in 1992, showing in Paris the following year.
His designs experiment with construction and materials while revisiting historical forms. A spring/summer 2003 dress in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, for example, combines parachute-inspired straps and nylon with references to eighteenth-century dress.
