Biography

Person.

Jean Baudrillard (1929–2007) was a French sociologist and cultural theorist whose writing examined consumer society, media and the relationship between images and reality. He taught at the University of Paris X in Nanterre and developed an influential critique of how objects acquire meaning through consumption and display.

The System of Objects considered everyday possessions, interiors and collecting, while later work explored signs, simulation and the instability of what modern societies accept as real. His books include America, The Transparency of Evil and The Perfect Crime. Baudrillard's writing provides a provocative framework for thinking about advertising, popular imagery and the cultural meanings attached to material things.
