Biography
Person.
Matt Wagner is an American comics writer and artist whose creator-owned work has explored the construction of heroic and anti-heroic identity across decades. His first published story introduced Grendel, a concept that grew from the criminal mastermind Hunter Rose into a much larger examination of violence, power and cultural inheritance; he also created Mage, a more personal modern-fantasy series. Alongside those independent projects, Wagner has repeatedly returned to established characters including Batman, The Demon and the heroes of Sandman Mystery Theatre.
In 1992 he wrote and drew Faces, the three-part Batman: Legends of the Dark Knight story centred on Two-Face, bringing the visual control of a cartoonist-author to a character built around divided identity and spectacle. Wagner later produced Batman and the Monster Men, Batman and the Mad Monk and the Trinity miniseries, extending his engagement with DC’s core mythology.
