Biography

Person.

Thierry Mugler was a French designer, photographer and director whose theatrical approach helped reshape fashion in the 1980s and 1990s. Raised in Strasbourg, he trained in dance before moving into clothing. His sculptural silhouettes drew on the body, science fiction, architecture and the animal world, using materials including vinyl, latex and metal.

His runway presentations became elaborate performances, bringing celebrity and drag sensibilities into couture. He designed and directed George Michael's “Too Funky” video and created costumes for Beyoncé and Cirque du Soleil. His fragrance Angel and the later Couturissime exhibitions reveal a practice extending well beyond the seasonal fashion collection.
