Biography
Person.
Bruce Weber is an American photographer and filmmaker whose romantic, physically direct images helped reshape the visual language of menswear and fashion advertising from the late 1970s onward. Born in Greensburg, Pennsylvania, in 1946, he studied film at New York University and photography with Lisette Model at the New School before rising to international prominence in the early 1980s.
Weber’s campaigns for Calvin Klein, Ralph Lauren and later Abercrombie & Fitch brought an idealised but unusually intimate treatment of the male body into mainstream advertising, while his editorial work for magazines including GQ, Vogue and Interview blurred the boundaries between fashion commission, portraiture and personal photographic essay. He also extended that practice into books, exhibitions and films, including the Chet Baker documentary Let’s Get Lost.
