Gary Speed

Gary Speed (1969–2011) was a Welsh footballer and manager whose playing career began at Leeds United. A midfielder, he was part of the side that won the 1991–92 First Division championship, alongside Gordon Strachan, Gary McAllister and David Batty.

He later played for Everton, Newcastle United, Bolton Wanderers and Sheffield United. For Wales he won 85 senior caps and captained the national team. After a brief period managing Sheffield United, he became Wales manager in December 2010, introducing changes in preparation and support that helped establish foundations for the team’s later progress.
