Biography
Person.
Jack Charlton (1935–2020) was an English footballer and manager whose career connected Leeds United’s most successful era, England’s 1966 World Cup victory and the transformation of the Republic of Ireland national team. A one-club player, he spent more than two decades with Leeds and made a club-record 773 appearances, winning the league championship, FA Cup, League Cup and two Inter-Cities Fairs Cups. Charlton earned 35 England caps and played every match of the 1966 World Cup-winning campaign.
After retirement he moved into management, eventually becoming an especially important figure in Irish football by leading the Republic of Ireland to Euro 1988 and the 1990 and 1994 World Cups. His managerial style was direct and pragmatic, but its cultural impact went well beyond tactics: the Ireland teams turned qualification for major tournaments into shared national occasions.
