Biography
Person.
Sophia Al-Maria is an artist, writer and filmmaker whose work examines imperialism, technology and competing accounts of history. She studied comparative literature at the American University in Cairo and aural and visual cultures at Goldsmiths in London. Her films weave together music, oral history, literature and dance, often through fragmented narratives and science-fiction imagery.
Her work has been presented at Tate Britain, the Whitney Museum and the Venice Biennale. She was writer in residence at Whitechapel Gallery in 2018 and has also written for television. Across these forms, she questions how images and stories shape people’s understanding of the past and possible futures.
