Biography

Person.

Bridget Riley is a British painter born in London in 1931. She studied at Goldsmiths and the Royal College of Art, developing an abstract practice concerned with perception and the relationships between colour, shape and light. Her black-and-white paintings attracted attention in the early 1960s.

Her work appeared in the Museum of Modern Art’s 1965 exhibition The Responsive Eye. In 1968 she won the International Prize for Painting at the Venice Biennale. Her subsequent work has continued to explore colour and visual sensation through precisely organised abstract compositions.
