Sheila E

Sheila E. is the professional name of Sheila Escovedo, an American percussionist, drummer, singer and songwriter from a musical Bay Area family. Her father, percussionist Pete Escovedo, was an early influence. Before her solo breakthrough she had already worked with musicians including George Duke and Herbie Hancock.

Her collaboration with Prince produced The Glamorous Life, bringing her percussion and vocals to a large pop audience. She has continued working across funk, jazz, R&B and Latin music, including the salsa album Bailar. Her memoir The Beat of My Own Drum describes the musical and personal experiences behind that career.
