John Hurt

John Hurt was a British actor whose work encompassed film, television and theatre. His roles included Richard Rich in A Man for All Seasons, Max in Midnight Express and Winston Smith in Nineteen Eighty-Four. His performance in The Naked Civil Servant won a television BAFTA, followed by a leading-actor film award for The Elephant Man.

Hurt also appeared in Alien and later played Ollivander in the Harry Potter films and Control in Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy. BAFTA recognised his contribution to British cinema in 2012, reflecting a career that moved between intimate character studies, literary adaptations and widely seen genre films.
