Biography
Person.
Steve McQueen (1930–1980) was an American actor whose laconic screen presence and genuine fascination with cars and motorcycles made him one of the defining images of masculine cool in 1960s and 1970s cinema. After television success in Wanted: Dead or Alive, films including The Magnificent Seven and The Great Escape established a persona built less on dialogue than posture, movement and controlled defiance.
Bullitt fused that screen identity with McQueen’s real involvement in motorsport, while The Thomas Crown Affair, The Getaway and Papillon demonstrated how readily the same physical economy could move between crime, action and character drama. He received an Academy Award nomination for The Sand Pebbles and remained a major star until his death in 1980.
