Biography

Person.

Joe Casely-Hayford (1956–2019) was a British fashion designer whose work spent four decades dissolving the supposed boundary between formal tailoring and the clothes, music and subcultures of the street. Trained in traditional cutting as well as fashion design, he established his own label in the mid-1980s and developed a language in which Savile Row construction could coexist with military surplus, punk, sportswear and the multicultural visual life of London.

Casely-Hayford dressed musicians including The Clash, Lou Reed and U2, showed internationally and later became creative director of Gieves & Hawkes, bringing his outsider sensibility into one of Britain’s oldest tailoring institutions. In 2009 he founded Casely-Hayford with his son Charlie, extending the same dialogue between heritage and contemporary style into a new generation.
