Biography
Person.
Pennie Smith is a British music photographer who studied graphics and fine art at Twickenham Art School. She worked on Friendz magazine with Barney Bubbles and Nick Kent before an early major commission photographing Led Zeppelin on tour.
As a staff photographer at NME, she documented musicians both onstage and in portraits. Her close association with the Clash produced the cover photographs for London Calling and Sandinista!, as well as the book The Clash: Before and After (1980). Her wider subjects include Joy Division, the Stone Roses, Siouxsie Sioux and the Slits, placing her work across successive generations of British music culture.
