Biography

Person.

Simon Underwood is a British bassist associated with the experimental music emerging from post-punk. He played with the Pop Group before joining Pigbag, whose line-up combined bass, percussion and brass instruments. The band’s music drew on funk and jazz, and Papa’s Got a Brand New Pigbag carried that sound into the British singles charts.

Underwood played on the group’s early recordings and continued through the arrival of vocalist Angela Jaeger. After Pigbag broke up, he worked with Jaeger and fellow member James Johnstone in Instinct. His career connects the more abrasive side of post-punk with its turn towards dance music.
