Biography

Person.

Neil Jordan is an Irish film director, screenwriter and novelist whose work has repeatedly moved between literary fiction, gothic fantasy, political history and psychologically complex popular cinema. His career began in writing: his early collection Night in Tunisia won major literary recognition before he moved into filmmaking, writing and directing Angel in 1982.

Films including The Company of Wolves, Mona Lisa, The Crying Game, Interview with the Vampire, Michael Collins and The Butcher Boy established a body of work in which identity, desire, violence and Irish history often intersect with genre storytelling rather than sitting outside it. Jordan has continued to publish fiction alongside his film career, making him unusual among major directors for maintaining sustained practices in both cinema and literature.
