Biography
Person.
Jean-Baptiste Mondino is a French photographer and director whose work helped define the crossover between fashion imagery, music video and editorial portraiture from the 1980s onward. Born in Aubervilliers in 1949, he came to image-making through music, first working as a DJ and composer before establishing himself behind the camera.
Mondino’s photographs and videos are highly constructed without losing their sense of performance: musicians, actors and models appear as collaborators in compact visual worlds built from styling, lighting, graphic control and an acute awareness of pop iconography. His subjects have included figures such as David Bowie, Madonna, Prince, Björk, Sting and Tom Waits, while his commercial and fashion work has extended across major magazines and brands.
