Biography

Person.

Trevor Francis (1954–2023) was an English footballer and manager whose career became emblematic of the increasing scale and international mobility of British football in the late twentieth century. He made his Birmingham City debut at sixteen and scored 119 goals in 280 appearances before Nottingham Forest made him the first British player associated with a £1 million transfer in 1979. Within months Francis scored the winning goal in the European Cup final against Malmö, securing his place in Forest history.

His career then moved through Manchester City, Sampdoria, Atalanta, Rangers, Queens Park Rangers and Sheffield Wednesday, as well as England, for whom he won 52 caps. That range took him from Second Division football in the early 1970s through European competition, the North American Soccer League, Serie A and the new Premier League era.
