Finding Signal to Noise inside The Face

Four contents pages provide a route into a graphic narrative published among fashion, music and club culture.

Published 2026-09-11

The contents pages of The Face place Neil Gaiman and Dave McKean’s Signal to Noise among fashion stories, interviews, music coverage and club reporting. This setting is useful evidence in its own right: the narrative was encountered as part of a magazine, alongside material addressed to the same readership.

The July 1989 issue lists Part 2, Occlusion, on page 94. August lists Part 3, also on page 94; September lists Part 4, Deconstruction, on page 120. October moves to page 136 for Part 5, The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse.

Those page references make the serial easier to find and compare across separate objects. They also show why a magazine needs more than a list of cover names: the route between these issues is an interior work whose location changes with the issue.

These four indexed instalments are a documented selection, not a claim of a complete contents index or a complete serial checklist. Gaiman and McKean are credited together as creators here, following the wording visible on these contents pages. More specific production roles require their own evidence.
