Checking the Warhol supplement
Why an announcement and the completeness of an individual copy are different kinds of evidence.
Published 2026-09-11
The editorial in the September 1989 Face announces a twelve-page Andy Warhol retrospective supplement for UK editions. It describes the supplement as the official guide to the Hayward Gallery exhibition. The notice establishes that the publisher advertised an additional component for a particular edition.
It does not establish whether the supplement survives with TMR’s copy. The available photographs show the front, rear and contents, but do not show the guide. The catalogue therefore records its presence as unverified; it does not label the object incomplete merely because the guide has not been photographed.
This distinction matters whenever magazines came with posters, booklets, records or other extras. A publisher’s announcement describes what an edition offered. Photographs or a physical collation establish what a particular copy contains. Both belong in the record, with the difference kept visible.
Here the next useful piece of evidence would be a physical check for the guide and photographs of any surviving component. Until then, the uncertainty is part of the catalogue description rather than a gap to fill by assumption.
