Catalogue note
Picturegoer for the week ending 27 November 1943, with Paulette Goddard on the colour cover. The issue is particularly rich in home-front material. A substantial ‘Millions Like Us’ feature, freely adapted by Marjory Williams with Gainsborough’s permission, retells the wartime factory-worker story centred on Celia and her experiences of conscription, factory work, class mixing, romance and bereavement. The facing reader-response page preserves audience reactions to contemporary films. On the rear, Ministry of Food advice explains the current dried-egg ration and gives a jam-pancake recipe, while the National Savings Committee promotes Gift Tokens as a patriotic Christmas present. Goddard’s cover adds a transatlantic wartime-star dimension: in 1943 she starred as an Army nurse in So Proudly We Hail!, for which she received an Academy Award nomination.
