Fantagraphics Books
Independent American comics publisher founded in 1976, widely associated with alternative comics, cartooning, artist-led work and archival reprints.
Overview
Fantagraphics Books
Fantagraphics was founded in 1976 by Gary Groth and Mike Catron, with Kim Thompson joining soon afterwards. Across alternative comics, classic newspaper strips, translated work, criticism and artist monographs, it developed one of the most influential catalogues outside the mainstream American superhero industry.
Why it matters
For TMR, Fantagraphics represents comics as an art and publishing culture in its own right, connecting individual objects to alternative cartooning, archival recovery and creator-focused book production.
