Catalogue note
Original The Face Volume 2 Number 2, November 1988, with vividly smiling Neneh Cherry front-cover photograph by Eddie Monsoon, styling by Judy Blame and clothing credited to Rifat Ozbek. The magazine praises her new 'Buffalo Stance' as its single of the year before the record's first Official UK Singles Chart appearance in December. A contemporaneous 1989 Los Angeles Times report says Virgin Records mailed more than 300 copies of this very issue to US radio programmers and critics, establishing the physical cover's real promotional role. Contents range from Cameo and Teddy Riley's emergent New Jack Swing, Jaime and Gilbert Hernandez's Love and Rockets, Nick Cave by Nick Kent, Glasgow scooter culture and 1988 UK clubbing to Clint Eastwood's Charlie Parker biopic Bird. Striking late-1980s red masthead and blue vertical graphics sit opposite a full-page Bacardi Rum advertisement. A new, physically distinct issue in TMR between existing Volume 2 Nos. 1 and 4.
