Laser Disc Co. Ltd. / Pioneer
Pioneer became one of LaserDisc’s most important hardware and software supporters, introducing a business-use player in 1979 and the VP-1000 home player in the United States in 1980. In March 1981, Yamanashi Pioneer was renamed Laser Disc and began planning, editing and producing LD software titles; that October Pioneer released the LD-1000 player and 70 LD software titles in Japan.
Why it matters
This entity is fundamental to TMR’s physical-media collection because LaserDisc is not only a carrier format: Pioneer’s hardware, mastering, packaging and software operations shaped the material culture through which films were collected in the pre-DVD era.
