The Royal Mint

British minting institution with more than a millennium of history, today operating from Llantrisant in South Wales.

Overview

The Royal Mint

The Royal Mint traces its institutional heritage through more than 1,100 years of British coin production. The London mint was established within the Tower of London by the late thirteenth century, later moved to Tower Hill, and transferred production to a new Llantrisant site during the decimalisation programme from the late 1960s to the 1970s.

Why it matters

The Royal Mint is central to TMR’s coin and bullion collection as both manufacturer and design institution, linking monetary history, portraiture, state symbolism, industrial production and precious-metal collecting.

Research note

The Royal Mint frequently describes its history as extending back to 886. TMR uses the more cautious formulation of a more-than-1,100-year heritage while recognising that the organisational form of the mint evolved substantially over that period.
