The Darkness
British rock band whose 2003 debut Permission to Land combined hard-rock musicianship, glam theatricality and humour at a moment dominated by very different strands of early-2000s guitar music.
The Darkness
The Darkness broke through internationally in 2003 with the chart-topping debut album Permission to Land and I Believe in a Thing Called Love. The band split at the height of its first period of fame in 2006 and reformed in 2011, subsequently returning to recording and touring. Its deliberately flamboyant visual identity and classic-rock references made the group a distinctive piece of early-2000s British music culture.
Why it matters
TMR’s interest lies in the way the band’s music, styling, promotional material and contemporary media coverage preserve an unusually theatrical strand of British rock culture.
