Warp Records
Independent record label founded in Sheffield in 1989 and closely associated with the development of British electronic music and its visual culture.
Warp Records
Warp grew out of the Sheffield record-shop culture around Steve Beckett and Rob Mitchell and became a label in 1989. Early releases by Forgemasters, Nightmares on Wax and LFO placed it at the centre of the emerging bleep sound; the label later became home to artists including Aphex Twin, Autechre and Boards of Canada. Its catalogue and identity developed in close dialogue with designers including The Designers Republic, making artwork and graphic systems unusually central to the label’s cultural presence.
Why it matters
Warp matters to TMR beyond recorded music: it connects flyers, print, design, label culture, electronic music and the broader visual identity of British club culture from the late 1980s onward.
