Biography
Person.
Louise Bourgeois was a French-American artist whose sculpture, drawings, prints and fabric works explored memory, family relationships and psychological experience. Born in Paris in 1911, she grew up around her parents' tapestry-restoration business and moved to New York in 1938. Her practice developed from painting and printmaking into sculpture.
Later works included enclosed installations known as Cells, figures made from old clothes and monumental spiders. Maman was presented at Tate Modern's opening in 2000, alongside her tower installation I Do, I Undo, I Redo. Bourgeois continued drawing and making prints throughout her career, using changing materials to revisit enduring emotional themes.
