Biography
Person.
Joseph Menna is an American sculptor who joined the United States Mint in 2005 and became its chief engraver in 2019. Trained in sculpture in Philadelphia, New York and St Petersburg, he has worked with both traditional modelling and digital processes. He helped introduce digital sculpting and drawing methods into the Mint’s production.
Menna also makes fine art and entertainment-industry collectibles. His coin work includes a collaboration with the Royal Mint’s Gordon Summers that brought Britannia and Liberty together in a shared design. The project translated two national personifications into a paired composition, linking the practices of the British and American mints.
