Biography
Person.
Taryn Simon is an American artist born in 1975 whose work combines photography, text and graphic design. Her projects use extensive research to examine systems of classification and the relationship between an image and the information surrounding it. She studied at Brown University and has exhibited internationally.
A Living Man Declared Dead and Other Chapters I–XVIII, made between 2008 and 2011, traces family lines and the forces acting upon them, including territory, religion, violence and political power. Its ordered portraits, narratives and supplementary images expose gaps as well as connections. Her work has been shown at Tate Modern, MoMA and the Whitney.
