Biography
Person.
Daidō Moriyama is a Japanese photographer born in Osaka in 1938. He moved to Tokyo in 1961, assisted Eikoh Hosoe and began freelancing in 1964. His grainy, blurred and high-contrast images examine everyday life amid the transformations of postwar Japan.
Magazines and photobooks are central to his practice, including his work for Provoke and the experimental Farewell Photography (1972). By cropping, enlarging and reprinting photographs in different contexts, he treats the image as reproducible and open to revision. The Photographers’ Gallery presented a major retrospective in 2023–24.
