Biography
Person.
Ryan McGinley is an American photographer whose early pictures recorded the friendships, nightlife and creative communities around him in New York. Graffiti artists, skateboarders and musicians appear as participants in a shared social world, giving the photographs an intimacy that grew from knowing the people in front of the camera. The Whitney Museum presented The Kids are Alright: Photographs by Ryan McGinley in 2003, and the International Center of Photography awarded him its Young Photographer Infinity Award in 2007.
His later work expanded into road trips and natural landscapes, placing models in carefully organised situations while leaving room for unplanned movement and encounters. That interplay between direction and apparent spontaneity is central to his images of youth.
