Grace Jones is a Jamaican-born singer, performer, model and actor whose work brings music, fashion and theatrical self-presentation into close contact. After modelling in New York and Paris, she became a prominent figure in late-1970s disco, including through her recording of La Vie en rose. Her subsequent work at Compass Point in the Bahamas moved towards a distinctive combination of reggae, new wave and dance music, heard on Warm Leatherette, Nightclubbing and Living My Life.
Jones’s collaborations with Jean-Paul Goude made photography, costume and staged performance integral to that musical identity. Her controlled poses, dramatic silhouettes and forceful presence offered a different model of pop stardom, with the image operating as a performance in its own right. Later work with Trevor Horn produced Slave to the Rhythm. Her appearances in The Face place this exchange between sound and image within the visual culture of the 1980s.
