Biography
Person.
Dennis O’Neil (1939–2020), widely known as Denny O’Neil, was an American comics writer and editor whose work helped redirect mainstream superhero comics toward greater psychological depth and contemporary social concerns. After beginning his career in journalism and entering comics in the 1960s, he became a major writer at DC, where his collaborations with artist Neal Adams helped restore Batman’s darker, more detective-driven character after the camp associations of the television era. Their Green Lantern/Green Arrow stories also brought subjects including racism, poverty and drug use directly into superhero comics.
O’Neil later returned to DC as the editor overseeing the Batman line from the mid-1980s, guiding the character through a period that included some of the most consequential reinterpretations of modern Batman. As a writer, he continued to explore Bruce Wayne’s moral formation in stories such as Shaman.
