Biography
Person.
Jerry Dammers is a British musician, songwriter and keyboard player who founded the Specials and the 2 Tone record label. Established in Coventry in 1979, the label brought together music, graphic design and an anti-racist message, helping launch several bands associated with the ska revival.
Dammers wrote Free Nelson Mandela, released in 1984, and co-founded Artists Against Apartheid with Dali Tambo and Chandra Sekar in 1986. His work linked popular music with international political campaigning. In 2014 South Africa awarded him the Order of the Companions of O. R. Tambo in Silver for his contribution to the Free Mandela campaign and Artists Against Apartheid.
