Stephen Gill

Stephen Gill is a British photographer, born in Bristol in 1971, whose projects often begin with sustained attention to a particular place. His work in Hackney developed through photographs of streets, markets and local life, but also through experiments with the material image. He has buried prints, placed objects inside the camera and combined photographs with plants and found fragments.

Books including Hackney Wick and Hackney Flowers bring these methods together, with the latter incorporating flowers and other material collected in east London. Published through Nobody, these projects treat the photobook as a carefully sequenced object as well as a means of circulating pictures.
