Catalogue note

TANK Magazine Volume Two, Issue One, December 2000, physically titled “big up.” on the cover. An early issue from the London independent magazine founded in 1998, combining art, science, literature, politics, photography and fashion. The photographed contents include John Maeda on machines; Tony Benn; photography by Larry Towell, AES Group, Gueorgui Pinkhassov and Stephen Gill; art including Ali Mahdavi; and a broad fashion section. The issue predates TMR’s existing 2004 and 2005 TANK holdings by several years and materially strengthens the archive’s documentation of the publication’s early development.

Why this object matters

The Maeda/Towell/Pinkhassov/Gill contents make an outstanding early TANK art-technology-photography document. A volume opener is not necessarily a substantive relaunch. Reduce to 8.8 and remove Gold while preserving its formative context.

Evidence limits: Assumed complete under the standing TMR magazine workflow. The supplied contents and masthead refer to subscription and distributor pages but do not identify a detachable supplement or free gift for this issue; no missing component is evident from the supplied evidence.

Score and assessment method

Archive Importance: 8.8 / 10.

This is a curatorial judgement, not a measurement accurate to one tenth or a market valuation. Read the explanation and its evidence limits together.
