Biography

Person.

Ian Rank-Broadley is a British sculptor known for figurative work, public memorials and portraiture for coins and medals. Born in Surrey in 1952, he studied at Epsom School of Art and the Slade, followed by a period of study in Italy.

His portrait of Elizabeth II was introduced on British coinage in 1998. Designed to retain its impact on small coins, it presented the monarch with a deliberate emphasis on mature likeness rather than idealisation. His larger public works include sculpture for the Armed Forces Memorial at the National Memorial Arboretum and the Dean Colet memorial at St Paul's Cathedral. These commissions connect his study of the human figure with national remembrance and public representation.
