Tyler Mitchell is an American photographer and filmmaker whose work examines beauty, leisure and the possibilities of Black life. Born in Atlanta, he studied film and television at New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts before developing a practice across editorial photography and exhibitions.
His 2018 photographs of Beyoncé made him the first Black photographer to shoot a cover for American Vogue. Alongside fashion commissions, Mitchell creates images that place Black subjects within imagined spaces of freedom and ease, often using landscape as a setting. His book Wish This Was Real brings together work exploring those themes across portraiture, performance and the American South.
