Mat Lopes

Mat Lopes is a Brazilian comics colourist, also credited as Matheus Lopes. He began publishing colour work in 2011 and taking regular professional assignments in 2012. His credits include Batgirl and Star-Lord, and he collaborated with Rafael Grampá on Batman: Gargoyle of Gotham for DC Black Label.

In discussing his process, Lopes describes building a colour approach from the script, artwork and conversations with the creative team. He selects palettes in relation to lighting, atmosphere, the focus of a scene and the separation of visual planes, treating colour as part of the story’s organisation and emotional effect.
