Biography

Person.

David Mazzucchelli is an American cartoonist whose career moved from some of the most influential superhero comics of the 1980s toward an increasingly personal exploration of what the comics form itself could do. He began professionally at Marvel and DC, where collaborations with Frank Miller on Daredevil — including Born Again — and Batman: Year One established him as a remarkably controlled visual storyteller, able to make gesture, architecture and page rhythm carry as much meaning as dialogue.

After leaving regular superhero work, Mazzucchelli published his own anthology Rubber Blanket and collaborated with Paul Karasik on an adaptation of Paul Auster’s City of Glass, before creating the graphic novel Asterios Polyp. That book made design, colour, typography and drawing style part of its account of personality and perception, and received major literary recognition.
