Biography
Person.
Helmut Newton developed a highly staged form of fashion photography in which glamour, narrative tension and the performance of power repeatedly displaced the conventions of the studio. Trained in Berlin by the photographer Yva before being forced to leave Germany, he later established his mature career in Paris and worked extensively for international fashion magazines.
The Helmut Newton Foundation traces how his street scenes, portraits, nudes and location photographs challenged established modes of representation across several decades. His monumental 1999 book SUMO made the photobook itself an unusually ambitious designed object.
