Catalogue note

June Newton’s revised, more accessible large-format reworking of the landmark 1999 SUMO project. It retains the monumental feel and importance of one of modern photobook publishing’s defining objects without being the original signed/numbered giant edition.

Credit / attribution note: Substantial 2009 XL reworking of Helmut Newton's landmark SUMO, revised by June Newton and preserved here with its original presentation stand. It is intentionally a smaller, more accessible later edition rather than the historically pioneering 1999 signed/numbered 50 × 70 cm SUMO, so the exact TMR edition remains just below Gold Star threshold.

Edition / bibliographic note: Photographed colophon states “First published in 1999”, ©2009 TASCHEN; edited and designed by June Newton. This ISBN had multiple print runs, so exact printing is intentionally left unverified.

Condition note: Dust jacket VG with light edge wear, long curved rear surface scratch/pressure mark and small yellowish spot. Underlying white cloth and sampled interiors Near Fine+. Stand is present; booklet not yet confirmed missing.

Preserved discrepancies / uncertainties: Photographed colophon states “First published in 1999” and ©2009 TASCHEN. This ISBN went through multiple print runs, so exact 2009 printing remains intentionally unverified. | Making-of booklet is not confirmed missing; do not mark it absent unless the user later confirms this.

Research status: Core ISBN, TASCHEN 2009 revised-edition attribution and 464-page extent independently revalidated 15 Aug 2026. Exact printing remains intentionally unverified from the photographed colophon, and the Making of SUMO booklet remains pending physical confirmation rather than being marked missing.

Why this object matters

The revised 2009 XL edition retains substantial photographic and book-design value, and the stand is confirmed. Retain 8.9 provisionally while the Making of SUMO booklet and printing remain unverified; do not score it as the original signed giant SUMO or assume the booklet is absent.

Evidence limits: Making of SUMO booklet and exact printing remain unverified; the stand is recorded present. Do not disturb a seal to settle this review.

Score and assessment method
