Marvin Hamlisch (1944–2012) was a composer and conductor whose work crossed Broadway, cinema and popular song. Trained at Juilliard and Queens College, he composed the musical A Chorus Line and scores for films including The Way We Were and Sophie's Choice. His adaptation of Scott Joplin's music for The Sting helped introduce ragtime to a new film audience.
For The Spy Who Loved Me, he composed Nobody Does It Better, with lyrics by Carole Bayer Sager and a recording by Carly Simon. He also worked as Barbra Streisand's musical director, connecting orchestral composition with concert performance.
