Biography
Person.
Janette Beckman is a British-born photographer whose work documents music, street style and the people who make subcultures. She began photographing during the punk era for Melody Maker and The Face, recording bands and audiences as well as making record-cover images.
After moving to New York in 1983, she photographed emerging hip-hop performers including Run-DMC, Salt-N-Pepa, LL Cool J and Slick Rick. Her books include Made in the UK, The Breaks and Rebels: From Punk to Dior. The MashUp brought her hip-hop photographs into collaboration with graffiti artists. Beckman's archive connects British punk with New York hip-hop, following the ways that music, clothing and self-presentation create a public identity.
