Hussein Chalayan is a fashion designer born in Nicosia, Cyprus, in 1970. He graduated from Central Saint Martins in 1993 and launched his label in 1994. His work uses clothing and performance to explore migration, cultural identity and technology, drawing on his experience between Cyprus and Britain.
His graduate collection, The Tangent Flows, included garments buried and later excavated to alter their surfaces. Subsequent projects extended into films, installations and stage costume. In 2015 he created the dance production Gravity Fatigue with choreographer Damien Jalet at Sadler’s Wells.
