Grandmaster Flash is the DJ and producer Joseph Saddler, born in Barbados and raised in the Bronx. His experiments with turntables and mixers helped shape early hip-hop: by switching between matching records, he could extend a rhythmic break and provide a continuous foundation for dancers and MCs.
He formed Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five, whose records brought Bronx hip-hop to an international audience. The group became the first rap act inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2007.
