Catalogue note
February 1983 issue of The Face, No. 34, built around 'The Making of Club Culture' and a Derek Ridgers photograph from the Batcave at the Gargoyle, 69 Dean Street, Soho. The contents place the club-culture feature alongside Marc Almond, Grandmaster Flash, Eddy Grant, Nigel Planer, George Clinton and an early Sade Adu feature, with a full-page Sade portrait by Mike Laye on the rear cover. The issue is a concentrated primary document of early-1980s London nightlife, post-punk and emerging goth culture, while also connecting that scene to hip-hop, funk, pop, comedy and The Face's increasingly distinctive Neville Brody-era editorial design.
Why this object matters
Ridgers’s Batcave image and the concentrated club-culture feature preserve an early original account of the Soho post-punk/goth milieu. The associated funk, hip-hop and early Sade material strengthen Gold status at 9.2 across TMR’s nightlife holdings.
