Biography
Person.
Jamie Smith, known as Jamie xx, is a British musician, DJ and producer. He helped shape the xx's sparse combination of voices, guitar and electronic rhythm, beginning with their 2009 debut album.
His work beyond the band includes We're New Here, the 2011 reworking of Gil Scott-Heron's I'm New Here. That project brought Scott-Heron's voice into contact with contemporary British electronic music. Smith's solo albums In Colour (2015) and In Waves (2024) draw more directly on club culture, combining dance-floor energy with a reflective atmosphere. His collaborators have included Romy, Oliver Sim, Honey Dijon, Robyn and the Avalanches, while other work includes the score for Wayne McGregor's Tree of Codes.
